  History of Midwest Office Technology

In 1960, Kenneth Illig left IBM and started a small typewriter repair company in Kansas City. In that same year, three gentlemen in Des Moines started a similar business. By 1972, Ken Illig had purchased the Des Moines business and continued to grow both companies through the sales and service of typewriters, then calculators and finally copiers.

In the late 1980s, Mr. Illig purchased Metro-Plex Information Systems. MOT has always had a small presence in the Topeka area but decided to increase its presence there and so purchased Modern Office Methods in February of 2003.

In January of 2003, the names of all the companies were changed to Midwest Office Technology, Inc. to reflect the new direction of our businesses - we have moved from simply selling and servicing copiers to becoming a full-line dealership providing total office solutions to customers in the three state area - Iowa, Kansas and Missouri.

All of the branches of MOT operate independently and all sales, service, and billing are handled locally. We have always believed that the best way to deliver excellent customer service is by maintaining a strong local presence in the communities we serve.

 
 

  Current Management and Philosophy

Susan Illig, Ken's daughter was born and raised in Kansas City. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas and a masters from Colorado State University. Ken asked Susan to become involved in the companies in 2002, so he could enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

Susan purchased the MOT companies from Ken in January 2004 and is now the President of all branches. She brings a number of years of experience in management of people and projects which have allowed her to step into this new position with confidence. The greatest asset of MOT in all three branches is the tenure and commitment of many excellent employees. Susan's philosophy of team building and leadership, together with the expert skills and knowledge of the management teams in each location, has allowed the companies to continue to flourish.

As technology continues to change, the way we all manage our day-to-day business will change with it. Susan is dedicated to providing all employees with continued training and development that will allow MOT to provide customers with the best service and document management solutions.

MOT has always been a family owned and operated business. That legacy continues. It has never been our desire to be the biggest, but it has always been our desire to be the best.
